ADAM O'DONNELL

Capitalise on complexity

It's time to rethink the way we work

It's a VUCA world out there...

VUCA - a term used by the military to describe the volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity of conflict today and yet it also describes perfectly the environment that any business must learn to navigate if it's to survive and thrive.

Some teams just seem to handle it better than others...

Some teams accept that they don’t, and will never, have all the information - while others form yet another committee or commission yet another study to produce yet more analysis.

Some teams adapt and improvise at every level to overcome problems quickly and creatively - while others stop and wait to be told what to do if the situation changes.

Some teams manage disruption and last-minute changes with ease - while others wonder why their plans didn't work and they couldn't achieve anything.

What's going wrong?

Our structural blueprint for many organisations was designed over 100 years ago and the cracks are starting to show.  Our legacy systems of management seek to eliminate uncertainty by control and dealing with ambiguity by yet more analysis or simply asking the boss what to do.

The results are plummeting staff engagement, burnt-out managers and a bottom line that's constantly under threat.

So how do you prepare your team to operate in a VUCA world?

Well, you could close your eyes and wait for it to return to stable, certain, simple and clear - but that may take a while...

Alternatively, you could look at who’s already doing it well and learn from them.

That's where I come in…

When it comes to building teams who thrive in this sort of environment, the worlds elite Special Forces have been doing it for years and have learnt a few things along the way.

While the environments themselves may differ, the planning processes and management tools we adapted over the years and continue to use every day are just as suited to the front lines in a competitive and constantly evolving market as they are to the front lines in a conflict against a determined and adaptive enemy.  We also learnt a thing or two about developing leaders along the way too...

What I do

Build An Elite Team

If we want our front-line teams to operate in this new world of volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity then we need to equip them properly with the tools, knowledge and mindset to do it well.

Building a High-Performing Team is a blend of art and science.  It's not a linear 'do this, then that then a bit more of the other' - if it was, everyone would be doing it.

The science part is all about frameworks, practices and processes that can be documented, repeated and tuned.  The art is in creating the cultural foundations of trust and a willingness to grant and accept responsibility for outcomes.

Our Elite Teamwork Program is a unique blend of art and science that helps you build a high performance team committed to mission success.  It's ideal for strengthening existing teams or helping new project teams form quickly and effectively.

The Corporate Commando blog - Always A Little Further - takes its name from the inscription on the memorial dedicated to the SAS fallen. It's a quote from the Golden Road to Samarkand by J.E Flecker and it captures the spirit of the SAS  perfectly - humble warriors for whom the team and the mission come first and who will never falter in the pursuit of their objective regardless of what obstacles they face.
